Welcome to my webpage! My name is Ms. Pederson, and I teach Health and Physical Education Classes for both Grade 7 and Grade 8. I LOVE physical activity, and believe that life is much more enjoyable when we are at our optimum levels of health and fitness. I want students to have a positive experience, and learn how to apply good health and personal fitness habits into their daily lives. I believe if they develop good habits now, they will be more likely to continue them as adults, and reduce their risk of many health related problems. Below you will find a section for 7th grade, 8th grade and parents. These include study guides for students and links to informational health sites for both students and parents. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at the email address or phone number listed above!

***MOMS: kids typically have a lot of questions about child birth / delivery. They are curious to find out how long you were in labor with them, and any specific things about their birth. Please use this opportunity to have some great discussions with them about when they were born. They have been very interested in this unit, and have a lot of great questions! Some (those specific to them) are questions only you can answer! I told them about a new National Geographic Video that is available at many public libraries entitled "In the Womb" It uses the new 4-D ultrasound to show fetal growth and development culminating in delivery. FACS now covers fetal development, but I don't believe they use this disc. If they are really interested in this topic, it is a great video to see! :)
NOTE: fetal growth and development is covered within the FACS curriculum now, so it is no longer a part of the 8th grade health curriculum.

Links and Resources For Parents
BOOK:
With summer quickly approaching, I want to encourage all parents to help keep your kids active over the summer months! There are so many physical and cognitive benefits to DAILY activity. I recently purchased a new book from a Harvard doctor that statistically shows how daily activity benefits kids in the classroom. It centers around a study done in Chicago, Illinois (right here in the midwest!) I think you will enjoy seeing the positive results! If you are looking for a good book, I would like to recommend it! Here is some more information about it:
The books full title = "SPARK: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain" by John J Ratey, MD (John J Ratey, MD is a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School). Released January 10, 2008

Synopsis on the back of book, and one sentence from the front:
The latest research shows that for your brain to function at its peak, your body needs to move. In Spark, John J Ratey, MD, demonstrates exactly how and why physical activity is crucial to the way you think and feel. He explains how aerobic exercise prepares your brain to learn, improves mood and attention, lwers stress and anxiety, helps stave off addiction, controls the sometimes tumultuous effects of hormonal changes (THATS HUGE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL), and guards against and even reverses some of the effects of agining on the brain. Exercise is a way to supercharge your mental circuits to beat stress, sharpen your thinking, lift your mood, boost your memory and much more.
Inside cover intro:
Did you know that in a landmark study, aerobic exercise was shown to be as effective as antidepressants? ..... That a revolutionary fitness program helped put one US school district of 19,000 kids first in the world of science? That, in fact, exercise sparks new brain-cell growth? The evidence is incontrovertible: aerobic exercise physically transforms our brains for peak performance. In Spark, John J Ratey takes you on a fascinating journey through the mind-body connection, presenting startling new research to prove that exercise is truly the best defense against everything from mood disorders to ADHD to addition to menopause to Alzheimer's. He explains that the brain works just as muscles do - growing with use, withering with inactivity - and shows why getting your heart and lungs pumping can mean the difference between a calm, focused mind and a harried, inattentive self. Filled with cutting-edge science and amazing case studies, Spark is the first book to explore the connection between exercise and the brain. And with a simple, targeted regimen to get your body moving and your mind in peak condition, it will forever change the way you think about your morning run, and, for that matter, the way you think.
Chapter 2: Learning: Grow your brain cells:
p. 35 "...What allows us to absorb the material is where revolutionary new science comes into play. In addition to priming our state of mind, exercise influences learning directly, at the cellular level, improving the brain's potential to log in and process new information"...
