Mondays (Large Group)
This night is intended for beginners to advanced players that want to learn the basics of chess in a fun and easy going
environment. Students are greeted by the sound of their favorite music
as they enter the cafeteria and are offered free pop to drink while
playing chess. There are also special theme nights like Disco,
Hawaiian, Cinco de Mayo, and Cold Chill. Each
session includes a lesson on strategy and time for competition. Students are separated into groups for lessons based upon their grade. Sixth graders go first and are escorted into the choir room where the lessons are given in a fun and challenging format. Students are given a handout that reviews the material covered that week.
Competitive matches can be played between any two players. Teachers are available to help students find new people to play. Each player is given an initial ranking which will change with every match played. Players' wins and losses are recorded in order to compute weekly ratings
and rankings. Students may play each other outside of meetings and
report scores to change their ratings. Monday Chess Club runs from 2:30 to 4:00 throught out the school year. We are understand that there will be conflicts in students schedules at times. We are very understanding and flexible. Please come when you can. There are after school buses available for students that need rides.
